THE LAST METROID IS IN CAPTIVITY
THE GALAXY IS AT PEACE...

Metroid is a long running franchise by Nintendo, having originally released in 1986 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It, alongside Castlevania, kickstarted the trend of action-adventure games known as Metroidvanias-- which exist to this day.


Metroid can be played in a nonlinear fashion, with certain areas only accessable depending on what power-ups you have. However, the door is also open to sequence breaking, which means you can potentially get certain items early or access certain places before you are meant to.

The story of Metroid is that of Samus Aran, intergalactic bounty hunter whom is sent to the Planet Zebes to stop the evil species of Space Pirates from using the parasitic lifeforms known as Metroids from bringing disaster upon the galaxy.

The series has 6 mainline games, 2 Remakes, 3 'sub-series' games, and three spinoff games, with another sub-series game coming soon! Hover over the following boxart to learn more about these games!

MAINLINE

In the year 20X5, The Space Pirates attack a Galactic Federation research vessel and seize samples of the parasitic lifeforms known as Metroids-- a powerful lifeform created by the Chozo, planning on using them to as biological weapons to destroy all who oppose them.

After a failed attempt to strike at their base of operations located on Zebes, a lone bounty hunter known as Samus Aran is chosen to infiltrate the base and destroy the leader of the Space Pirates, Mother Brain.

Released on the Nintendo Entertainment System on August 6th, 1986. A remake known as Metroid: Zero Mission was released for the Gameboy Advance on Fbruary 9th, 2004.


Fun fact: Metroid is considered to have the first female protagonist in gaming, which was kept secret from most players, even those who have read the instruction manual! The only way to find out was to beat the game as quickly as possible!
After Samus Aran foiled the plans of the Space Pirates to use Metroids for their own evils, the Galactic Federation; concerned by the power of the Metroids, attempted to wipe out the species on it's homeworld of SR388. However, after the teams sent disappeared on the planet, Samus Aran is contracted to finish the mission.

Originally released on the Gameboy on November, 1991. A remake with enhancements to the gameplay & an expanded story was released for the Nintendo 3DS on September 15th, 2017.


Fun fact: The creators of the remake, MercurySteam, whom had worked on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, were originally planning on remaking Metroid Fusion!
After Samus Aran brings the last Metroid to the Ceres Space Colony and it's discovered that its power can be used for the good of civilization, the Space Pirates-- having recovered from their prior defeat on Zebes, capture the last Metroid and bring it back to their reconstructed base on planet Zebes.

Samus Aran gives chase, encountering a much larger base than before, with more dangers to be encountered...

Originally released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System on April 18th, 1994.

Fun fact: Super Metroid is considered to be one of the best video games of all time, having established the Metroidvania genre in full, as well as becoming immensely popular among speedrunners!
Dealing with the fallout of the death of the baby Metroid, Samus Aran receives a distress signal from a Galactic Federation research station known as the BOTTLE Ship. Upon landing to investigate, she comes across her former CO, Adam Malkovich, and discovers a terrifying conspiracy. . .

Released for the Nintendo Wii on August 31st, 2010.

Uh, not much of a fun fact for this one, best to skip Other M. Other M is... not popular in the fanbase, to put it lightly. Not gonna fill this tooltip with it, but, it's stuff that's long buried in the past now and everyone can probably look back at and just simply ask one important question:

After being sent to explore the surface of SR388 with a survey crew from the Biologic Space Laboratories, Samus Aran is attaked by a parasitic organism known as X. After suffering a near fatal crash, having large parts of her suit surgically removed from her body, and being healed by the cells of the last Metroid, she is sent to the BSL Station to investigate a mysterious explosion that had occured.

When she gets there, she finds that things have gone horifically wrong. Her removed suit had disappeared. Everyone is dead, and the space station is infested with X. With the Metroid DNA within her allowing her to absorb the X Parasites, she has to survive on the space station gone mad.

Released for the Gameboy Advance on November 17th, 2002.

Fun fact: This game was released alongside the sub-series game Metroid Prime, and had made use of the Gameboy Advance link cable to unlock additional content for prime!
The Galactic Federation has received video evidence that the X Parasites, despite their extinction on the BSL Research Station and SR388, are still alive, residing on the planet ZDR. After seven EMMI (Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifiers) units are sent, only to disappear on the planet, Samus Aran is sent to investigate.

Once she's there, she encounters a mysterious Chozo warrior, whom defeats her in combat and leaves her standed at the very bottom of planet ZDR. Samus' mission now becomes one of survival, with her having to endure not only the dangerous creatures on ZDR, she has to fight off the nigh-indestructable EMMI, whom are all programmed to go after her.

Released for the Nintendo Switch on October 8th, 2021.

Fun fact: Metroid Dread has existed as an idea since the days of the Nintendo DS as far back as 2005, but the technology at the time was too limited for the scope of the game. It wouldn't be until the success of Metroid: Samus Returns by MercurySteam that Metroid Dread would become reality, to the excitement of thousands!

SUB-SERIES

The Prime subseries of games were created by the North American studio Retro Games; acting as an interquel between Metroid / Metroid: Zero Mission and Metroid II: Return Of Samus / Metroid: Samus Returns; taking a more first-person adventure kind've playstyle as compared to the other entries in the series being more 2D oriented.

Intercepting a distress signal from the Space Pirate frigate known as Orpheon; in orbit around Tallon IV, Samus discovers that the Space Pirates are experimenting with a unknown and dangerous, mutable substance known as Phazon.

Chasing down her arch-nemesis Ridley to the planet below, she battles the space pirates and the horrid monsters on the planet, fighting through the ruins of a tribe of Chozo that once lived there, discovering more about the horror that is Phazon. . .

Originally released for the Nintendo Gamecube on November 18th, 2002. Re-released for the Nintendo Wii in the Metroid Prime Trilogy collection on August 24th, 2009.

Fun fact: This game was the first game ever released by Retro Studios, after a long and tumultuous development; where it was originally going to be a third-person game.
While investigating for a missing platoon of Galactic Federation troopers, Samus Aran crashlands on the planet Aether-- Home to the hibernating race of Luminoth, a planet which has been corrupted heavily by Phazon, splitting the planet between two dimensions; light and dark.

Combined with the Space Pirate forces that have invaded Aether, as well as a mysterious and powerful doppelganger of herself, Samus is brought into conflict with a war against the Ing, the inhabitants of Dark Aether.

Originally released for the Nintendo Gamecube on November 15th, 2004. Re-released for the Nintendo Wii in the Metroid Prime Trilogy collection on August 24th, 2009.

Fun fact: Metroid Prime 2 was the first Metroid game to have a multiplayer mode, which mainly involved player vs player elements. While it was ultimately considered average at best, it was still a neat addition to the game.
Six months after the events on Aether, Samus Aran and three other bounty hunters are called upon for assistance with a strange computer virus that has been spread by the Space Pirates. However, things quickly go astray when planet Norion, a Galactic Frontier base, is invaded by a massive army of Space Pirates and a gigantic meteor that would've poisoned the entire planet with Phazon. Despite stopping this meteor, Samus and the other bounty hunters are infected with Phazon by her evil doppelganger, Dark Samus.

Having survived and being equipped with the ability to control Phazon, Samus is sent throughout the galaxy to locate gigantic seeds of Phazon located on three different planets, and finally put an end to the threat.

Originally released for the Nintendo Wii on August 27th, 2007. Included in the Metroid Prime Trilogy collection on August 24th, 2009.

Fun fact: This game made use of motion controls, allowing for a greater degree of control over where you were firing, as well as allowed for the player to control Samus' ship for the first time and travel between different planets and space stations.
METROID PRIME 4. IT'S FINALLY REAL AFTER SO LONG, COMING IN 2025, MADE BY RETRO STUDIOS. I'M SO FUCKING EXCITED. SYLUX IS IN IT TOO. YES. YES. YES. YES. YES.

SPIN-OFFS

There are three different spinoffs for the Metroid series, all of which are based off of the Sub-Series. How that happened, I am not certain, but it's certainly neat as in my personal opinion, the prime games are really great :)

Uh.
It's a Metroid Prime themed pinball game that was released for the Nintendo DS on October 24th, 2005. One that inexplicibly came with a rumble pack for the Nintendo DS. It also had walljumping, power-ups and bosses that you'd have to beat to finish a table.
The Galactic Federation has received a strange telepathic message from the Alimbic solar system, claiming of an 'ultimate power' lying in wait within the system. Samus Aran is contracted to investigate and determine if it should be obtained, kept secret or outright destroyed.

Unfortunately for her, she's not alone... Six other bounty hunters have intercepted the signal.

Metroid Prime Hunters was released for the Nintendo DS on March 20th, 2006.

Fun fact: While the single-player mode was average, the multiplayer of it was rather fun-- allowing you to play as one of seven different bounty hunters, of which you can learn about in the directory up above!

Had a demo released on November 21st, 2004; which included three game-modes where you obtain points depending on how well you play them.
After the eradication of Phazon from the galaxy, The Galactic Federation has begun a top-secret military project to combat the regrouping forces of the Space Pirates. Project Golem-- a weapons project involving the manufacturing and usage of gigantic mecha suits. Discovering the presense of Space Pirates in the Bermuda System, the elite unit known as the Federation Force, armed with these Mech, are sent to investigate. . .

Released for the Nintendo 3DS on August 19th, 2016.

So uh, not a fun fact for this one, it's... honestly an average game from what I've heard, it's a co-op game where you can have four people. It just had the unfortunate timing of coming out after a long hiatus in Metroid. . . coming out after the already controversial Other M. . .

Luckily we got Metroid: Samus Returns afterward, so, things worked out well in the end, and we can look back at Federation Force as an odd curiousity.
