Throughout the past twenty or so years, there have been various forms of Media for Metroid. This media mainly involves some strange comics, 4komas, and mangas. This page is dedicated to the noteworthy, and a bit obscure, of such medias! Alongside that, each of these comics shall be linked to an archive of them hosted by Metroid Database.

METROID

Volume 1 (Ch. 1-7) Volume 2 (Ch. 8-16)

The METROID Manga is an origin story of sorts for Samus Aran up to the events of Metroid: Zero Mission, whereupon the most common depictions of Samus are understood to originate from. Beginning serialization in 'Monthly Magazine Z' on January 2003 and then adapted into two different volumes, the manga was written by Koji Tazawa and illustrated by Kenji Ishikawa.

Although certain details of this are debatably canon, it's one of the most definitive answers and backstory for Samus Aran, as well as introducing a few characters whom would either be briefly mentioned in other media or play a big role.

On a personal note, I still enjoy the manga. Plus, the depiction of Ridley in it is so gleefully evil and demented that I find myself enjoying his appearances. Even though for some reason he talks in the manga. Why not?

Nintendo Power Comic

Chapters 1-5

The Super Metroid comic was the original source of information for the history of Samus Aran, as well as an... interesting adaptation of Super Metroid. Drawn & written by Benimaru Itoh and released in Nintendo Power in 1994, these comics helped paved some of the way to the backstory of Samus Aran, including the introduction of Old Bird.

Not a whole lot to say, the comic is rather strange. Ridley also talks here too which is funny as always. Also, a random ass simp is Samus' ally here.

Yeah this comic is pretty much noncanon but if you enjoy cheese, you've got cheese.

Captain N

Compilation

This... technically probably doesn't count, but, may as well include it for noteworthiness and... strangeness.

Captain N was a... comic series that also appeared in Nintendo Power. It's... something. Never really read it. But uh. It's surreal. Seriously. Look at this.

That thing? That's Mother Brain. Yeah. I uh, never read it, so I don't have much comment on it. But. It's a thing. ???????????

Samus And Joey

Volume 1 (Ch. 1-5) Volume 2 (Ch. 6-11) Volume 3 (Ch. 12-17) Volume EXTREME (Ch. 1-12)

Alright now THIS ONE I enjoy a helluva lot and wish it got more recongnition honestly.
This is Samus and Joey.

The long and short is that it's the adventures of Samus Aran and a kid sidekick named Joey Apronika after she saves the kid's colony from a space pirate attack. Now a lot of people hate sidekick kid protagonists, but Joey is actually useful and actually helpful for the most part. Cheesey at some points but genuinely rather heartfelt in others, alongside just being balls to the wall insane and-- okay enough being restrained on this

Ya see how one of the volumes is called 'Volume EXTREME'? You see how it goes on for a fair bit? Ya see those two covers on the left side? This is genuinely a really fun and awesome comic and i'll tell you why:

SAMUS IS SO BADASS IN THIS YOU HAVE NO IDEA IT'S SOME GURREN LAGANN LEVEL OF BULLSHIT THAT HAPPENS WITH HER AT TIMES. THE GUY WHO MADE THIS WAS KOUJI IZUKI AND GODDAMN DOES HE DO A GOOD JOB. I DON'T KNOW HOW ELSE TO SELL YOU IT OTHER THAN THIS IMAGE HONESTLY

THAT IS SAMUS. IN THE DESERT. WITH A FUCKING CLOAK. READY TO KICK ASS AND TAKE NAMES. SERIOUSLY.
SHE BLOWS UP A VOLCANO. SHE FIRES A PLANET BUSTER WHILE RIDING HER SHIP. IT'S GENUINELY THE BEST FUCKING THING EVER. READ IT.
GENUINELY. READ IT. I LOVE IT A LOT AND IT DESPERATELY NEEDS MORE ATTENTION I SWEAR TO GOD.

*cough*

so uh yeah samus and joey is a great thing. also the first volume has a bonus chapter that adapts the opening of Metroid Fusion which is also awesome.

Metroid Prime: Episode Of Aether

Ch. 1-7

From Comic BomBom, and released exclusively in Japan, Episode Of Aether is essentially a different interpretation of events that occur during the beginning and bits of the end of Metroid Prime 2.

Long story short, wheras Samus is alone in the game, Samus comes across a small group of survivors from the attack that wiped out the galactic federation troop that had ended up on planet Aether. Alongside that the first chapter has a prelude of what Samus was doing before she ended up going after the platoon of soldiers as well, saving a bunch of folk being attacked by space pirates.

It's pretty good! The writer of it was Matsumoto Hisashi, and I think he got the thing down pretty good.

Super Metroid 4Koma

Compilation

Coming from the Shounen Oh Game Comic and written by Matsumoto Hidetaka, the Super Metroid 4Koma is, like everything else here that was made in Japan, was exclusive to japan. It's more of a humorous parody of Super Metroid rather than a canon, serious story.

Not really a lot to say other than it's a funny little thing that will surely make you giggle reading some of them :) But also

look at this. do i need to say more?
